Convert idx-sub to srt

I downloaded a movie in avi format with separate subtitles in the idx-sub format. My stand-alone dvd player supports avi files with .srt format but not idx-sub format.  I can't find those subs in srt format on any subtitle website.  Is there a way to convert the idx-sub to srt format?  I tried loading the sub file into subtitle workshop & got "unsupported format".  I'm not very good technically so converting the avi file is not an option.

you need either "Subrip" or "Subresynch". they work like an ocr program, you'll have to "teach" them the letters, but Subrip allows you to save charmaps you can load again the following time. both freeware, Subresynch is included in Vobsub.

Thanks for the info lyliaker.  I found Subresynch in Vobsub on my computer and a nice tutorial on how to do it on the web, so I'll give it a try.

...and when you're done, please upload the .srt here on subscene. Thx. :-)

(I second that subrip is better than subresync, and just as easy to use)

Subresync worked perfectly.  I was delighted to learn how to do convert the subs.  Once I watch the movie, I'll upload the subs here.  It will be my first such venture, so I want to make sure they're okay.  Thanks for your help!

you're welcome. enjoy your stay here :)

But dont you have to go to the process of converting the image manually and painfully type all the letters that appear in the image?? Let me know..

if you use Subrip you only have to do it a few times because you can save all the ocr characters in a charmap you can load every time. moreover what you call "painful" just takes a couple of minutes :)

Wait.. isnt there any good and no painstaking way to do this.. Just like direct and automatic way from sub to srt (though I know it is virtually impossible to do this).

 No OCR SERIOUSLY!!

Had too much of pain from that!
