If we are going to make subtitles, like the pros on tv, then they use italics, when you have somebody talking on a phone, or from a tv, and perhaps when we hear what a person is thinking. I think it is, in other words, when it is not direct speech/talking person to person, it is used. So it is just some kind of guidense to help distinguish who is talking, when you can't see the person. Like the voice from a unknown caller on the phone.
