If there are no subs here for a movie and I find them on another subtitle website and if they prove to be good quality, do you want them added here?  If so, what is the protocol?  My objective would be merely to increase your database not to steal someone else's subs.  Would I keep the same name, credit that uploader, that website?  And one further thing, I have one in mind which I found in .sub format and will convert it to .srt format.  Would I post the original or the converted?

interesting and important questions.

You're very welcome to upload subtitles that are not already here, regardless from where they come. I think it's great that you worry about stealing credits (Hear Hear people out there! :-).

There is no iron rule about that, only this: don't remove any credits. When you change/edit/resync you might add your name to the existing credits, saying what exactly you did. "resynced by, spell-checked by etc." Usually the uploader alias from other sites is not mentioned here, I like it to say where the subtitle came from (Found on ....), although I am not even sure whether my fellow admins like it that I make these references...

It is perfectly ok to change the format as you like and post your version. However, you should let the credits intact. Standard format seems to be .srt (ca. 70%) here, in my opinion it's sufficient to have either .srt or .sub.

Before you upload here, please check whether the same subtitle isn't already there.

i'd like to add one thing to what rogard said, which i agree with. some sites/translators don't like their subs to be posted elsewhere. so i guess you should probably make sure they're ok with it, since i've had pms by people in the past, who asked me to remove subs which were uploaded without their direct permission, no matter if the credits were still there.

To further clarify, in the situation I mentioned above, making no changes except the conversion from sub to srt, I would do the following:

I would keep the file name the same, just change the file type to srt. Then add under comments "found on opensubtitles.org; converted from sub to srt format" Does that sound okay?

I always start my subtitle search here because it's the best in terms of content and site layout. Instances in which a movie doesn't have subtitles here and I find them elsewhere would be the only times I would upload. I like the idea of referencing the other site so that if my changes don't work for a downloader, the original subtitles can be accessed.

lyliakar, you and I were composing at the same time & I didn't see your post until I finished.  Would you suggest then to omit the website name and just leave the original subtitle file name intact?  If so, would I need to document the change from sub to srt? 

i just think you should check if sites agree with that.

if they don't you shouldn't upload their subs here.

if they do, you can leave the source there.

as for saving as .srt only, there's no need for you to document that.
