Have a look here. This is a very cool solution, but it might not work on your DVD player.
The easiest way that works with almost every recent (no more than 2 years old) DVD/Divx certified standalone player:
Put the film and all the subtitles in one directory, burn it to disk (including the directory, because otherwise you'll end up with a choice between ALL the subtitles on that disk. Quite annoying with 12 Lost episodes and 2 subtitles for each...), and when you open the film your pllayer will ask you which subtitle to play. Or you use the "subtitle" button on your remote. Usually .srt and .sub work perfectly.
Works like a charm with all languages with standard ASCII characters.
