Help Required: AVI File doesn't play after putting .srt file in folder

I am using WMP with K Lite Codec Pack (having vobsub). I am facing a strange problem. I have downloaed .srt files and placed them with the .avi files.

For some, movies play with subtitles but for some they don't play altogether and as soon as I delete the .srt files movie starts playing again. Is there a problem with .avi file or with .srt file.

I tried to analyse using Subtitle Workshop but to no avail. I analysed for both the working files and as well as non-working files.

Please help.

Hmm. Sounds as if a de- and reinstallation of the whole codec pack could help...(I don't like those codec packs anyway - They are often unreliable)

But first you could try this: In WMP go to Options -> Performance -> Advanced.
Uncheck the box titled "Use overlays" and press "apply". Restart WMP.

Make sure you don't have both vobsub and ffdshow active: they both try to take care of the subtitles, and that will inevitably go wrong.

Did subtitles ever work for you at all? Or is this the first time you try it? Have you tried a different player?

Thanks for reply,

Before posting query, I have tried de & re installation. no change in status

Also, tried your suggestion, same thing, no change in status.

Subtitles worked for me and are working for some files but for some other files not working and at the same time making .avi files unrenderable i.e. .avi file itself doen't play. After I delete the .srt file, the same .avi file plays smoothly in WMP.

If there was issue regarding ffdshow / vobsub, I think none of the files will have worked,

hi man... i was wondering if you manage to fix the problem. im having the same thing. im also new at this, hehe

thanks

I have one final idea what could be wrong.

WMP has problems displaying subtitles with videos resolutions that are not a multiple of 16 ("the mod16 problem")

Please check two films, one where the subs are working and another where they don't.

What we need is the resolution of the video (like 640x256). You will find this information in WMP, File menu /properties or in windows explorer (right-click) properties/adavanced or so.

Now take each value and divide it by 16. If the result for the hight and width both are full numbers, I predict the subs are working fine, if not, there will be trouble.

I don't know of a solution for this problem. Other players will probably play those films with subtitles just fine. Try mediaplayer classic or VLC.

PS: another thing you could try is deinstalling vobsub and vsfilter and install vsfilter 2.33. That version seems to work better in many cases.

Feedback please. :-)

hey thanks rogard!! ive tride what you said and i believe you are right. i also run a video that doesnt play on wmp on Divx and it work perfectly.

thanks!!

Thanks Rogard,

But I have checked what is suggested by you and I am afraid, this correlation doesn't seem to hold good. Consider the following examples

Subtitle Working in WMP & VLC

 File 1: 696 * 284 (both W & H not divisible by 16)

 File 2: 640 * 266 (W divisible by 16 but H not divisible by 16)

 File 3: 608 * 256 (W not divisible by 16 but H divisible by 16)

Subtitle NOT Working in WMP but in VLC

 File 1: 668 * 278 (both W & H not divisible by 16)

 File 2: 580 * 234 (both W & H not divisible by 16)

And, all the above files are working perfectly in VLC / MP Classic.

I guess there seems to be another issue that is being missed.

Thanks for your help anyway.

There goes my theory...well, what can I say. I tried hard. :-)

I guess it will always remain the WMP mystery.

In my opinion, MPC is a much better choice anyway.

I have the same problem 'sometimes i can't play the movies until i rename the subtitle file'

While other movies work fine!! (Just like u)

I'm using "Windows Media Player" & "MediaPplayer Classic" & "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack"

I hope there is a solution for these problem because if i download a subtitle doesn't work with the movie i have to use virtualdub to make the movie and the subtitle one file, so i can watch the movie translated!!

 waiting for help.

Oh, that's a new one. So for some films it doesn't work in both WMP AND MPC?

As you could read here, I can't offer a solution.

How about this test: take a subtitle that is working with another film, rename it and try to play it with the problematic film. Does it work now?

If it does, something's wrong with the subtitle,. if it doesn't, the problem is caused by the video.

Hmm...and again we have somebody using K-lite codec pack. Coincidence? I'm not so sure.

 nice idea,

i have tried another worken subtitle but it doesn't work with the problematic video, i guess as u said the problem is with the video!!! but its not just with one movie it happens with many movies, and its not about the relaser like "axxo" or "fxg" because some times subtitles works with "fxg" releases and sometime not!!!

and this problem with me from about 1 year, before everything was just fine... so its not because of k-lite codec pack because i use it from along time...

but realy thanks for trying to help :)

So what has changed a year ago?

I assume you use vobsub (vsfilter)? Maybe you should install an older version of vsfilter?

How about VLC? Usually EVERYTHING works in VLC. Have you tried that?
