It doesn't have anything to do with being "afraid of the web", but more the flexibility of adding our own enhancements or modifications without the restriction of waiting for the developers. The subtitle community is, after all, one based on sharing and collaboration, so it seems pretty logical that we should all be allowed to contribute. It also saves you time and effort :)
As for OpenSubtitles, I agree that the movie hashing is an extremely handy feature, but it is potentially exploitable. If you're going to create an "Automatic Subtitle Downloader" for OpenSubtitles, then perhaps OpenSubtitles is the best place to announce and advertise it, and not here? After all, what use is it to subscene if it can't be used with subscene?
